22/05/2011 – BC National Tandem Sprint Championship sponsored by 3-IN-ONE
3-IN-ONE Newcastle Youth Omnium Meeting (Round of Northern Area Series)
Despite a few showers and threatening weather we had a fantastic day of outdoor track racing at the Newcastle under Lyme track with some great racing all sponsored by 3-IN-ONE Oil. Over 70 riders took to the track in a packed programme of over 45 events to see who the best riders were on the day. The event was a mixture of youth and experience, with seasoned riders in the exciting tandem sprint, along with stars of the future in the youth races.
3-IN-ONE sponsored National Tandem Sprint Championship
Barney Storey VC St Raphael and Anthony Kappes of YASUMITSU SCHLAPP came out on top to win the 3-IN-ONE sponsored National Tandem Sprint Championship after some very close racing. The pairing qualified fasted and held off brothers Ben and Rowan Elliot of VC St Raphael in the final 2-0 to add the National Tandem Sprint Championship to their long list of wins that include a Gold medal from the Beijing Paralympics. Seasoned riders and former champion Pete Boyd and David Heald of VC St Raphael came third beating ever green John Saysell and former National Junior Sprint Champion from 1988 John Munns 2-0
The crowds were wowed by a master class of close fast, exciting tandem riding from all the riders.

Under 16 Boys
A big field of 26 under 16 boys battled over 5 omnium events with some fast and furious racing as soon as event 1 the scratch race started. Chris Lawless was taking no prisoners as he went on the attack as soon as the gun fired to help rip the field to shreds. Lawless, along with Ollie Wood Aire Valley RT, Leon Gledhill Planet X and Newcastle regular Ryan Whatmough Shepherds Cycles put on an excellent display of riding ahead of their years to give the crowd some excellent racing that made my legs ache just watching. We have some real talent here for the future.
Under 16 Girls
Melissa Lowther WAKEFIELD Jnr TRI CLUB gave a dominant display of riding in the under 16 girls scratch, points, elimination, Keirin and 800m time trial winning all 5 events to get the lowest possible score of 5 in her omnium events. Team mate Lauren O’Brien claimed second place just holding off Megan Boyd Sportcity Velo in third place.
Under 14 Boys
Newcastle Track regular Thomas Rotherham Sportcity Velo showed he had put in the hard training over winter to follow in his brothers tyre tracks with success in the under 14 boys category. Thomas came out on top in all 5 events with a dominant display of riding to beat ever improving James Risk Weaver Valley and VELOCITY 3in1 CNP RT’s Alex Braybrooke.

Under 14 Girls
There was a real 3 way fight in the under 14 girls category. After 3 events 3 riders were in equal 1st place. However, after wins in the Kerin and 800m Time Trial Grace Garner Leicestershire RC showed her all round class and pulled away from 2nd place Abby-Mae Parkinson and home rider Paige Milward Lyme Racing Club.
Under 12 Boys and Girls
It’s always great to see a field of under 12 riders racing and this was no exception. These stars of the future battled away spinning little gears and all had big smiles on their faces. Thomas Humphrey came out on top with 5 wins in five races to score the lowest possible score of 5 in his races. Whilst local rider Liam Zwetschnikow Lyme Racing Club (known to everyone as Liam Z for obvious reasons) got better as the day went on, moving up the rankings to take a fine 2nd place overall from Thomas Lowe of Eastlands Velo.
